Cowboy in the ballroom - 2023
Cowboy in the ballroom - 2023
A cowboy hat, weathered brown, sits on a man’s head. He stands with his left hand on his hip, wearing a blue shirt and two-tone pants: dark navy above, bright royal blue below. The floor is polished wood, reflecting golden light from chandeliers blurred into soft circles. Gilded mirrors line the walls, but they are out of focus.
The photograph’s trick is obvious: put a modern figure in a historic ballroom and let the contrast do the work. The shallow depth of field makes the background a beautiful smear, all atmosphere and no detail. That feels like a cheat. The ballroom becomes a stage set, the cowboy a prop. I want to see the texture of the gilding, the faces in the mirrors, but the camera refuses.
This is 2023, Easy Realism, but the image is not easy. It is carefully arranged, almost theatrical. The title states what we already see. I miss the hesitation that usually marks Arthur’s later work. Here the statement is too clear, the composition too pleased with its own cleverness.
What holds me is the man’s posture: hand on hip, gazing away. He seems both present and absent, a visitor who does not belong but also does not care. That small human note saves the picture from being merely a concept.
